I mean any animal can sense that the object isn't food right away, and even if they couldn't, the diver would appear to be too much of a threat to stay and fight for it. The only logical explanation, as you implied, was to have fun.

May 25, 2012 - Octopuses do this all the time with divers out of boredom. What's DIFFERENT here is that this diver chased it and it wasn't expecting the diver to be so determined. Once the octopus saw that he had new respect for the diver so he became friendly and realized he could have more fun playing with him now that he knew the diver wasn't afraid.
