With a self hosted one, you can advertise on the site and have a LOT more options for themes and plugins and customization (and permalinks too). With going through wordpress (com not org), although it's free, you definitely limit yourself bigtime.

As someone new to start out I was surprised and disappointed. I will look into the Gator hosting company.

There are upgrades for security and protection, but you don't need those things. The only other thing I can justify paying for is the extra $4.95 (i think, not monthly though) for domain privacy so your name and address doesn't show when someone looks up the owner of the website. Hope this helps!
