May 24, 2012 - You severely limit your argument for Howard with the overly simplistic logic: "Since Dwight jumps highest, he would control Kareem's skyhook." Don't you think four of the top five all time blockers could also jump high? Yet they never really controlled Abdul-Jabaar's skyhook. The hardest puncher in fighting is not always the champ, the best dunker does not guarantee a title ring, the fastest runner is not always part of the winningest football team.
May 24, 2012 - Shotblocking in basketball is not just about height. As important is timing, then control (not really necessary). Forgot to mention, as the ALL TIME SCORING LEADER whose primary weapon was the skyhook, Kareem's pts came when FOUR OF THE NBA'S TOP FIVE BLOCK LEADERS were contemporaries: H. Olajuwon, D. Mutombo, M. Eaton, D. Robinson. Back to "control", though his block stats were not as prodigious as the leaders, Bill Russell's ability to both block and take the ball is highly regarded by some.
May 24, 2012 - LMFAO at Tomiauolo94. Serge and at one time, Dwight, focus 90% of their energy and effort on blocking and they WERE NOT as good at that facet as Hakeem and Wilt (a former track and field high jumper), who also were three times better than Serge and Dwight on offense. Even with better shotblocking ability than Ibaka and Howard, Olajuwon and Chamberlain STILL couldn't really stop Kareem's skyhook. Only when in the twilight of his career, did Abdul-Jabaar's skyhook accuracy drop off.
May 24, 2012 - Dwight and Ibaka are freaks of nature but blocks usually come from weak side. Even the best shot blockers only average one or two strong-side blocks per game - and that's against players who don't have anywhere near the sky hook's extension and release point. Plus, players that jump high are easily faked into easy layups and dunks. So I don't think Kareem would've had any problem adapting his game against today's jumping jacks.
May 23, 2012 - Modern science and fitness of present day have learned how to expose every potential skill a player has Today players are better trained and go on a routine that has 50 years of research to back up its results. Diet plays are large part as well due that present day supplements and research has allowed players to recover 3 times faster after games. Because Jabbar never faced a man who could move like Dwight on defense ...... Maybe he wouldn't have made that hook shot as much.
May 23, 2012 - No I'm just saying Dwight has the highest jump in nba history. Jabaar's hook was never contested by someone of that vertical skill. All I'm saying that I think Dwight could block that shot. You have to know that Howards vertical numbers from a standing position and running start have blown every record out the water. So the question is, was Jabbar hook shot every contested by a guy who has can easy put his chin up to the rim? No.
May 18, 2012 - Also, the sky hook is ideal for 1 on 1 isolation. Where you clear out the other 4 players around the 3pt arc, forcing the defenders to move up towards the arc or risk an illegal defense call. Then when the ball is thrown into Kareem the defenders have to race back from the 3pt arc to double team.
Usually by the time the double team comes it's too late as he's already moved to his spots and once he shoots it it's unstoppable.
May 18, 2012 - You can't trap him on his left when he's on the right side of the basket. If you did that the 2nd defender effectively becomes trapped between Kareem and the baseline and Kareem can just kick it out to whoever he was supposed to be defending who would be wide open. There could also be an illegal defense call on the defender.
When he's on the left side of the basket, he wants to come towards the middle , so a double team could be effective but Kareem could kick it out or look for the backdoor.
May 17, 2012 - I'm disappointed that people are surprised to see guards or wing players today who rely on the sky-hook for a high percentage shot. It's very difficult to block and is a fundamental asset to any player who is in the post area.
