May 21, 2012 - PhD in the Netherlands is a pretty well-paid job, you know. Especially when you're an external candidate.

sexywildlad Says:

May 1, 2012 - Why confused? I saw the light and gave up a PhD tied to university premises and thus expensive rent, very limited and possibly fruitless (at least for you) contact with supervisor/s, etc. unless your plans for grad school are clearly followed by a paid job you'd like, or if teaching is your passion. If you want a PhD for personal satisfaction or care about the title of Dr you can always do it on a distance basis. Mind you, my PhD would have been in philosophy, so a relatively easy choice ;-)

Apr 24, 2012 - In Norway foreigners can attend university and even graduate school for free. They pay a low yearly fee close to 80 bucks a yr. They just have to provide housing, etc. Anyway would definitely like to get my PHD in Norway. Def. will have a job there before I go for PHD. PHD is pretty laid back in fields outside of natural sciences. In terms of being able to work full-time and pursue it. So the Simpson's stereotype is well not fucking true.

lordblazer Says:

Apr 24, 2012 - Asia. Hell they pay foreigners to come to their countries and pursue degrees. You got MEXT in Japan, Taiwan Scholarship in Taiwan. APEC scholarship in Singapore, etc. Even China (the evil communist country according to Lou Dobbs) pays foreigners hell even Americans to go and study in their universities. Meanwhile the US is refusing to invest in education, actually outright cutting funding on all levels of education. What are we thinking about?

lordblazer Says:

Apr 24, 2012 - yea, I think that's the paradigm shift gen y is making. A lot are starting to either freelance or go into business for themselves. Even if it is just consulting you essentially are running your own business. Anyway it has to happen because there isn't going to be a safety for today's youth like the previous generations enjoyed. And we will be called whining babies for complaining about the lack of safety net. Then we will be berated despite being set up for this kind of societal failure

lordblazer Says:

Mar 29, 2012 - Tawt cmyunity kahlej for 15 years, counseled, mentored, hired and fired. Industry considers the AS/AAS the new HS diploma. A minimum in most heavy industries, just for entry level admission to the workplace. Unions are in on it too. Transparency in hiring is helping to drive the trend. Dumb laborer is unemployed or min. wage laborer...

TangomanX2008 Says:

Mar 24, 2012 - Another reason (and I am guilty of this too, but I am trying to learn my options), is that we seem to think in terms of "finding a job" instead of creating a job. It occurred to me a few months ago that the idea of finding an employer to give me a job has become a lifestyle. It seems like a few generations ago it would not have been a bid deal for someone to just open up shop and go in business for oneself, but now it seems like leap into the unknown.
