Mar 19, 2012 - As a white South African, this movie touched me deeply. The situation here, especially during Apartheid, was very similar - just more horrifying. I recognized some of my own family members in those white characters, the way they treat the black women. So relieved I'm from a different generation. I also had a "maid-mommy" while growing up, her name was Johanna - she helped bring me and my brothers up. I love her and I miss her, especially after this movie. Thank you for making me remember her.

Feb 11, 2012 - I understand if you mean the film is based on real life as in maids especially black maids in the 60's in America, but the actual story and stories within it aren't real. At the back of the book the author writes how she had a black maid as a young girl, but the stories within the book are not real. Although me and my friend were sure it was real until we read the book.
